Signe Miranda's Veranda: Bio

Signe Miranda

Toronto-based singer/songwriter Signe Miranda's new solo EP is called ‘Love Wins’. The five-song disc explores themes of love lost and won in a sincere alt-folk-pop style. A bedroom recording, the album is built mostly upon acoustic guitar and vocals, though it does include some guest musicians, Brian Allossery (The Lazy Poets), Sarah Greene (The Pickups) and Laura Fernandez. ‘Love Wins’ is charting on college radio stations across Canada and is being played on CBC Radio and on radio stations in the United States, Germany, Belarus, Macedonia, Colombia, Australia and New Zealand.

Originally from Belleville, Ontario, Signe began playing music at an early age and by fifteen was playing guitar and writing songs. She is the lead singer and guitarist of folk-rock-punk band Signe Miranda’s Veranda and drummer in roots-rock band The Pickups. Signe has performed for audiences in Canada, the UK and Norway.

“We really love your engaging style, it is emotive, minimalist, evocative and very subtle. The choice of material backed up with guitar is marvellous and gels together in a hauntingly beautiful sound that has you wanting more and our audiences most certainly will love your heartfelt songs…” Peter Merrett (Music Manager, PBS FM 106-7, Melbourne, Australia)

Signe Miranda's Veranda

Intricate drumming, played with punk intensity. The subterranean growl of a five-string bass. Infectious guitar riffs that echo in your skull for days. Then the singer opens her lips. A sweet, angelic melody, framing “heart-on-cardigan-sleeve” lyrics. Their songs are reminiscent of the raw energy of The Velvet Underground and Sonic Youth and the melodic sensibility of The Breeders.

Recorded live off-the-floor on an analog open-reel 4-track, in their 45 degree Celsius rehearsal space (a.k.a. The Sauna), Solar Eclipse captures the raw energy of the band’s live performances. They charted on CIUT (89.5 FM) in Toronto for three weeks (two weeks in the top 5) and on the national !earshot charts.

Signe Miranda formed the band in January of 2001, with a couple of friends she met at open stages in Toronto. Growing up in Belleville, Ontario, Signe developed her own songwriting style. Bassist Dan Noonan, drives the band’s sound with his energetic approach. Drummer Jamie Tanner, a five-year veteran of Toronto's hardcore scene, has an intense improvisational style that forms the bedrock of the band.
